The speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, on Thursday expressed her country’s support for Algeria’s desire to join the BRICS, stressing that the Federation of Russia considered Algeria as a "reliable and very important partner in the African continent."
In a statement to the press after being received by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the Presidency of the Republic, Ms. Matviyenko said: "With regard to Russia, Algeria is a reliable and very important partner on the African continent, and we have extensive cooperation in the field of trade and economy."
She added that Algeria "wants to join the BRICS group, and we in Russia support this."
And the Russian official revealed that she conveyed to the President of the Republic, during her meeting with him, a message from his Russian counterpart, Mr. Vladimir Putin, carrying an invitation to pay an official visit to the Russian Federation, in addition to his invitation to participate in the second Russian-African summit.
And she continued, "I had the honor to meet the President of the Republic and discuss with him about the Algerian-Russian bilateral relations, and we discussed a number of international and regional issues," noting that President Tebboune "has a vision of what is happening in the world."
And she made it clear that she had expressed to the President of the Republic her thanks and appreciation for Algeria’s "balanced and independent" position regarding regional and international events, and noted Algeria’s adherence to good relations with the Russian Federation, adding that President Tebboune affirmed that Algeria considers Russia a "great friend."
